Clawtoes

This pathology is very common and usually causes pain and difficulty putting on shoes.

In Podomédic Centers we are specialists in the making of silicone orthesis for clawtoes in order to protect and keep them in a correct position.

What are clawtoes?

The clawtoes are deformities that occur on the toes when the joints fold or flex more than usual due to continuous pressure.

It is a pathology that most often affects women around the age of fifty, but is possible at all ages.

We can classify their origin into mechanical and anatomical causes.

  • Mechanical causes:
Clawfingers may appear by the use of very tight shoes very and with high heels (thus pushing the fingers towards the tip).
  • Anatomical causes:
The The hyperlaxity of ligaments, obesity and menopause are factors contributing to the appearance of clawtoes.

The so-called "Greek" foot has a second toe that runs the risk of deforming into a claw because it is longer than the large toe.

Cavus feet, which have too pronounced an inner arch, are often accompanied by clawtoes.

Other conditions, such as Halux Valgus, are a very common cause of clawtoes.

The main symptomatology of the clawtoes is the reaction of the skin by friction with shoes as a result of its deformation.

Our body defends itself by producing thick skin lesions (hyperkeratosis), known as "calluses". These calluses are above the toe or at its end at the level of the toe pulp, causing pain, sometimes intense, that can limit correct deambulation.

If they are not treated, they form ulcers on their surface and are infected. Due to their proximity to articulations, these infections pose a risk of propagation to the corresponding joints and bones.

In Podomedic Centers we are specialists in the making of silicone ortheses to protect the toes and keep them in a correct position.

When clawtoes are still reducible, orthoses help slow the progress of the deformity.

The custom orthotics also allow stabilize the foot and prevent finger deformation.

Surgical treatment is only indicated when conservative treatment fails.

To prevent the appearance of clawtoes, it is important to use shoes with no high heels, broad and comfortable to prevent fingers from being narrow inside them..

It is also important to come regularly to the podiatrist to treat calluses that may appear at the feet.
