Podiatric prevention of children
Generalities
- Carrying out a correct biomechanics and a correct treatment in childhood, we can prevent a multitude of injuries in adulthood.
- The ideal age to carry out a biomechanical study is 4-5 years, except when marked deformities or symptoms of instability are observed in the child.
Pediatric podiatry: 1 – 6 months
- Watch the position and shape of the legs. Symmetry.
- Do not put heavy clothes in the crib.
- Promote correct sun exposure in order to acquire good levels of vitamin D. In this way infections and/or skin pathologies are prevented as it favors proper skin development
Pediatric podiatry: 6 – 12 months
- For its correct development, do not fit until it begins to walk.
- Socks or booties are recommended, encourage crawling and not force early ambulation (totally prohibited walkers that cause deformities in varus joints.)
- Nail and skin cutting advice (papillomas and fungi)
Pediatric podiatry: 3 – 4 years
- A podiatry visit is recommended to study the foot and assess possible deformities or abnormal gaits.
- A good recommendation can achieve good podiatric health.
Pediatric podiatry: from 4 years
- Talks-colloquia with parents.
- Periodic podiatric examinations.
- Symmetry measurements, knee changes, gait changes, types of soles, etc.
- Surveillance of the most frequent alterations in children. General foot care.
Exploration protocol in children
- Exploration of the march, with shoes and barefoot.
- Static standing examination. Study on the podoscope.
- Study of the footprint. Pedigraphy.
- Joint examination on the examination table.
- Footwear study
- Complete the individual examination sheet
Main reasons for consultation
- Valgus feet
- Heel pain
- Toe walking (equine)
- Instability
Advice to parents
- Watch him walk around the house barefoot and/or with socks. Especially the foot-ankle-leg alignment.
- With Wii® platform or Kinect® cameras that supervise personalized exercises for each child.
