Use and care of silicone orthoses
What is silicone orthosis?
Silicone is a polymer (elastomers) that, due to its elasticity and resistance, is used in many orthopedic and orthoprosthetic treatments. In podiatry they are very often used to protect fingers, to align claw toes or bunions and as replacement elements in case of amputations.

How to use silicone orthoses?
- The patient must be warned of the possibility of hypersensitivity reactions to the silicones or catalysts used.
- It is necessary to inform the patient of the discomfort that the use of these orthoses may cause, which are mainly: itching, peeling, redness, chafing, blisters, etc. If any of these situations appear, the patient must abandon the use of the orthoses and go to the orthopedic pharmacy.
- It is advisable to remove the orthosis when going to bed in order to avoid skin maceration.
- These orthoses should be worn with stockings or socks.
- It is essential that the patient learns to put on the orthosis correctly, manipulate it by its main part and avoid traction due to the interdigital supports.
- Avoid incorrect manipulation by avoiding traction that can jeopardize the integrity of the orthosis.
- The combined use of orthoses with astringents is advisable in the case of excessive sweating.
- Cleaning the orthoses is done with warm water and neutral soap.
- It is advisable to carry out a periodic review to check its effectiveness and condition.

Thanks for your comment.
It is important to note that in children. Silicone orthoses correct the alteration of the fingers, and in adults you can eliminate the discomfort, protecting the alteration they present, but we can also make corrective orthoses, improving the deformation that bothers them so much.
It really is one of the treatments most appreciated by all patients.
