Corns or calluses

Corns or calluses

What are they?

It is a thickening of the skin (hyperkeratosis) that develops in response to excessive pressure or friction in one area of the foot. When the skin is subjected to excessive pressure, it responds by thickening at certain points.

How do they appear?

It is due to a localized overload at certain points of the foot, which most frequently affects the skin below the metatarsal heads. Obesity, the use of inappropriate footwear (with heels and narrow toes), certain foot deformities (cavus foot) as well as certain diseases (neurological and circulation) can favor the appearance of corns.

Clinical manifestations

These "hardness" of the skin appear on the sites of the sole of the foot that cause pain when pressed, when standing and when walking. In cases where the disease progresses to bursitis, the pain will become more intense and constant.

Treatment

First of all, eliminate the causal agent: pressure.

In most cases, the treatment is non-aggressive: use suitable footwear and unloading insoles. Regular delamination of calluses is advisable, although this should never be excessive (to avoid leaving the skin totally unprotected).

Special caution should be taken depending on which pedicure salons. Our center very frequently treats infected fingers as a result of the manipulation of a callus.

Foot calluses are a clinical manifestation of our body's defense to protect itself from excessive pressure in the area. Our center first investigates the cause, and then applies the most appropriate plantar support in order to reduce discharge and cause the callus to disappear.
