Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis

What is it?

Hyperhidrosis is a rare disease characterized by bilateral and relatively symmetrical excessive sweating that appears on the sole of the foot and affects 1% of the population.

As appears?

Hyperhidrosis appears as a consequence of abnormally increased sweat production by the exocrine sweat glands caused by excessive stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. In plantar hyperhidrosis, the sympathetic nerves that stimulate the foot come from the thoracic and lumbar chains.

Symptoms

Although it is not a serious health problem, it is annoying for the person who suffers from it since it limits the quality of life of the affected individuals due to its psychological, social and work repercussions.

Patients with plantar hyperhidrosis have very moist and delicate feet.

Moisture and friction around the foot and between the toes cause the skin to soften easily and blisters and bad odors to easily develop. Which facilitates the appearance of fungal and bacterial infections, such as athlete's foot.

Treatment

In Podomedics Centers We will treat excessive perspiration of your feet to avoid bacterial and fungal superinfections. Furthermore we advise:

  • Wash your feet often and dry them well. Foot baths with salt water may have some benefit.
  • Use acid soaps and/or antiseptics to help normalize the bacterial flora such as: Lactacid®, Lactodermol®, and Germisdin®.
  • Change socks daily or twice a day if necessary. Cotton socks absorb sweat, but are more likely to cause blisters. It is advisable to use cotton socks. Avoid nylon socks
  • Wear shoes that allow air to circulate around your feet.
  • Treatment with iontophoresis is an effective treatment for idiopathic palmoplantar hyperhidrosis, it is well tolerated by patients and has hardly any adverse effects, improving the quality of life of people who suffer from this disorder.
